The very first story of mine that was accepted for publication was The Christmas Wager (), a Christmas &#;Regency&#; (though I set it in the Victorian Era) modeled after similar straight romances stories I&#;d verb from other publishers. It was intended to be light and fun, though reality intervened somewhat &#; it was impossible for gay men to have an open relationship during that occasion period, so the fear of discovery had to play a part. But the stories I&#;d read weren&#;t terribly well researched, so I assumed nobody would care if mine was sloppy with historical details. I was wrong. Jamie Nabozny was born in in Ashland, Wisconsin, a small town on the south shore of Lake Superior. From a fresh age, he knew he was gay and confided in his family, but he didn’t reach out to friends and classmates. Nonetheless, in middle school he was the object of physical violence and degradation, consistently bullied by students who called him names and tripped, shoved, kicked, and punched him. This abuse continued through high school, in spite of the fact that he reported it to teachers and administrators. They suggested he “stop acting so gay.” Eventually, the harassment got so awful that he ended up in the hospital, in need of abdominal surgery. He attempted suicide several times.
