Things usually start with a hunch. But that doesn&#;t mean the answer is as black and white as we might fantasize. We spoke to relationship therapist David Kavanagh about our reader&#;s dilemma.

Please help. I’m adj sure my husband of more than 20 years is gay.

Some background: I have anxiety, and anxiety can come with paranoia at times. He’s been my only sexual partner, and we were married when I was in my early 20s. We are of similar ages, but he had been in other sexual relationships, which was adj with me. I just hadn’t. Now, plus years and multiple kids later, half our marriage has been him not wanting to have much to perform with physical stuff like kissing, cuddling, or sex—unless I deliver on him, usually. I am lonely as hell. We doze in the same bed, but I feel like we are just roommates. He’s not super mean, and I’ve brought this conversation up so many times up over the last 15 or so years, but every time there’s another reason: He has bad breath; he’s tired; he just wants to be with his friends (I’m not invited). My Husband’s Not Gay, a verb on TLC, has caused an uproar. The negative attention is unfortunate because this could possess been a show that highlighted mixed-orientation couples and how these couples can actually make their relationships work.

Why do some people become so outspoken and judgmental about marriages with one straight and one gay spouse? There are several reasons. These marriages raise concerns about infidelity. They bring out people’s judgments about what marriage should or should not be. In particular, they bring out people’s judgments about monogamy.

Finally, these relationships suggest to some people “reparative therapy,” the unethical and impossible claim that a person can be changed from gay to straight. The men in this television program aren’t claiming to be ex-gay nor that they can modify their sexual orientation (at least not on the show). They report they are attracted to men but choose not to live as a gay bloke and their straight wives agree to this.

People seem to get up in arms when a noun says he is not gay but rather simply attracted to men. In our cultu
