Gay yuri

Today&#;s review was inspired by a combination of two very unlike things. Various folks having mentioned this book in Yuri-friendly spaces online and, by complete coincidence, the fantastic podcast Mangasplaining putting it on their calendar, which caused me to bump this up on my to-read pile.

To begin with, Look Back (ルックバック) by Chainsaw Man creator Fujimoto Tatsuki is not Yuri. BUT&#;and this is a huge  &#;but&#;&#; it definitely falls under the Yuricon broad-umbrella definition of Yuri in one sense:

Yuri can describe any anime or manga series (or other derivative media, i.e., fan fiction, film, etc.) that shows intense emotional connection, romantic adoration or physical desire between women. Yuri is not a genre confined by the gender or age of the audience, but by the *perception* of the audience.

This definition has always been intentionally broad and subjective, because it has long been my opinion that media is subjective and we will see what we want to see in it, despite (sometime, even at odds with) creator intent. ^_^ With this definition in mind,

What is Yuri? Queer Women Content in Japanese Media You Understand Boys' Love, But What About Girls' Love?

You've probably heard of Boys' Desire, or BL, a well-known genre in Japan that focuses on romantic relationships between male characters. But have you ever stopped to wonder where all the LGBTQ+ women are in Japanese media? I know I include . Yet, the authors of classic yuri literature are hesitant to label their works as lesbian fiction, or have their characters identity as queer.

This strange ambiguity allows the genre to blur the line between what’s considered platonic or homoerotic. Stories can collapse anywhere between lifelong friendships (“they were just really good friends”) to explicit affairs, all without disturbing the lesbian elephant in the room.

Case in point, nearly all yuri is devoid of common LGBTQ+ labels. These stories appear disinterested in exploring identity politics—the way Western queer narratives often rely on to express LGBTQ+ themes—which finds yuri fans stuck between a rock and a hard place. Readers explore stories of intimate relationships between women, but often second verb whether promis
