About GLMA

GLMA is a national organization committed to ensuring health equity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities and equality for LGBTQ+ health professionals in their work and learning environments.  To achieve this mission, GLMA utilizes the scientific expertise of its diverse multidisciplinary membership to inform and drive advocacy, education, and research.


History

GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality (previously known as the Gay & Lesbian Medical Association) is the world's largest and oldest association of LGBTQ+ healthcare professionals. GLMA was founded in , as the American Association of Physicians for Human Rights, with the mission of ensuring equality in healthcare for LGBTQ+ individuals and healthcare professionals. Today, there remain many misconceptions about LGBTQ+ health issues, with many assuming that LGBTQ+ health involves only HIV. GLADD

GLADD is the UK's only organisation that unites and represents LGBTQ+ doctors, dentists, medical and dental students from all over the country.

We open our membership to any doctor, dentist, medical or dental student who supports the values and constitution that GLADD stands for.

We run events in London and through our regional networks around the country. Highlights include our AGM dinner, summer and New Year parties, Pride and socials with other LGBTQ+ professional groups.

GLADD has a respected national voice in LGBTQ+ health activism and education, working with leading figures such as the British Medical Association, General Medical Council, Royal Colleges and Parliament. We collaborate with universities and the NHS to further research into LGBTQ+ health issues and hand over training aimed at empowering those working in and studying healthcare to tackle discrimination in sustain of their LGBTQ+ colleagues and patients.

Administrative/biographical history

GLADD: the Association of LGBTQ+ Doctors and Dentists’ had its roots in the Gay Medics and Dentals Group, a society of the University of London Students Union, established in by Martin Hamilton-Farrell and others.

The aims of the Gay Medics and Dentals Group was to support gay and lesbian clinical students in the University, and to promote the needs of homosexual patients to medical staff in London. One of their last actions, in December , was to bring a ‘Guide to counselling agencies for homosexual people in London’ to over 10, general practitioners and hospital specialists in London. The Group was disbanded in after many of its members had graduated.

In , Hamilton-Farrell re-established the group following the refusal of an advertisement by Scottish gay doctors in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). He wrote a letter to the BMJ, ‘Advertisement from group of homosexual doctors' calling for homosexual doctors to be accepted and supported. The letter drew a fine response and led to the establishment
