Mount Gay Extra Old or XO as they seem to hold re-branded it. For those in the know Mount Gay Extra Old is often known as MGXO. The XO notation on the Mount Gay is attractive standard across the rum and spirits industry to denote an aged spirit (without actually noting how old it is!).
As the Mount Gay Distillery is the oldest official distillery in the world established as the label denotes, I don&#;t think we need to worry too much about the heritage and authenticity of the contents of this Extra Old rum.
The more established distilleries use labels such as XO because they cannot guarantee the exact blend of rum&#;s which will be used in every batch of rum produced. Each cask will be alternative and the skill in making rum &#;uniform&#; comes in the shape of the master blender.
The master blender at Mount Gay is in the shape of Allen Smith who has been with the distillery over 20 years. Again this adds a guarantee as to what you will get in the glass.

Mount Gay Rum
Mount Gay has been producing rum since , making it the oldest rum producer in the world. The Mount Gay distillery is located in St. Lucy, Barbados. The company produces a variety of rums, including Mount Gay Eclipse, Mount Gay Extra Old, Mount Gay XO, and Mount Gay Inky Barrel. Mount Gay rum has won numerous awards over the years, including the prestigious Grand Prix d&#;Honneur at the International Rum Conference. The Mount Gay Rum Estate sits atop a ridge to the north of Barbados. During the first limited years of the 18th century, the locality was acquired by William Sandford who continued to use it as a sugar plantation. He named his purchase Mount Gilboa. The Mount Gay estate was inherited in by his son, the ironically named, James Sober. During the latter part of the 18th century, both James and his son, Cumberbatch, spent a good deal of time in England, thus they were unable to properly regulate their property. Accordingly, Cumberbatch appointed his friend, Sir John Gay Alleyne, to control the estate. Sir John died in and Cumberbatch named the estate, Mount Gay,

During lockdown I had the pleasure to join an online tasting with Miguel Smith of Mount Gay and that&#;s where, besides mixing a delicious Old Fashioned, learning about a Coffey Still broken since that has been restored a couple of years ago and noun up purchasing the Mount Gay Select Blend (more on that here), I tried the adj Mount Gay XO (MGXO) blend.
Mount Gay recently repackaged its whole core range and changed (or upgraded if you&#;d like) the blends for their Black Barrel (covered that here) and XO. This is all the function of the new Master Blender &#; Trudiann Branker who also released my favourite MG expression so far &#; Mount Gay Pot Still.
While rocking the EST on the label, the modern look is pretty modern featuring Barbados in the background and pinpoiting the distillery&#;s location in the north of the island in the St. Lucy parish. There is some information regarding the casks used along with some tasting notes, Trudiann&#;s signature and even a bottle number &#; mine is AP , so I guess it&#;s attractive special?
