The Power Rangers Introduces Its First Gay Character

The Power Rangers movie is making big waves for the LGBT community.

Somehow it's and the film marks the first-ever superhero movie to feature a gay protagonist character.

Though small, the scene in which the character—Trini, the Yellow Control Ranger played by Becky G—is pivotal for the film as we watch her come to terms with her sexuality. When one character asks about her "boyfriend problems," we soon grasp that she may actually be having "girlfriend problems."

Director Dean Israelite tells The Hollywood Reporter, "For Trini, really she's questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the repose of the movie is, 'That's OK.' The movie is saying, 'That's OK,' and all of the kids have to verb who they are and discover their tribe."

In the original Power Rangers series, Trini was portrayed as straight, but the transform is definitely receivi

Representation matters, and in , it&#;s more important than ever. Seeing your identity on-screen is so affirming, and at often times it can be life saving. Children&#;s shows especially have finally started highlighting queer characters and storylines—shows such as Andi Mack, Steven Universe, The Loud House, Voltron, She-Ra and the Princess of Power, and even My Little Pony. Kids need to see themselves represented in media. They should be able to see a character that looks like them, a character that talks like them, a character that loves like them. They should be able to notice that and know that nothing is wrong with them.

While queer rep in media is on the rise, the Power Rangers brand as a whole still lacks the level of queer inclusivity we desperately need. The BOOM! comics have given us more queer rep in a few issues than the reveal has in 27 years. Even the reboot gave us a vaguely queer Trini. But the show itself has yet to go beyond mere subtext. Fantasize how groundbreaking it would be to have

I was eleven when Power Rangers first aired in , and I came out as bisexual when I was I am now 39 and openly gay. I never figured we would have an openly gay character, let alone a Ranger on Power Rangers, because of the moral guardians and whatnot. Most of the time, the Might Rangers show is meant to be geared towards children ages Sometimes, that changes. In Space to Time Force were imagine to be for children 7 to 11, while Wild Coerce seemed to be for Children Anyway, I digress. The following is a SPOILER (for Dino Fury), so skip this if you do not want to know.

In the episode "Matchmaker," which aired in France but might air on Nickelodeon on October 9th. Javi thinks Izzy has a crush on a young man but finds it out it is actually on a fellow athlete Fern (who previously appeared in episode "Winning Attitude"). Some fans previously guessed Izzy was supposed to be gay. Some of those fans even saw her removing the skirt as evidence of her being gay. I didn't think so because it could have all just been a coincidence and also I didn't think Power Rangers would dare to

The confirmation of Ari and Remi’s relationship was a triumphant one for fans, only mildly soured by the notion that it could only happen in an expensive hardcover collection. Thankfully, that relationship was just the begin of Power Rangers finally embracing queer characters after so long.

In Power Rangers Dino Fury debuted on Nickelodeon and, after nearly 30 years with endless straight relationships, the character of Izzy Garcia made her triumphant debut as the first out queer Ranger in the TV show’s history along with her girlfriend, Fern. The two are absolutely adorable together and there’s nothing subtle about their relationship. Izzy gives Fern kisses on the cheek, the two go to prom together, and Izzy directly refers to Fern as her girlfriend. It was a enormous leap forward for the franchise after endless years of subtext, missed opportunities, and outright homophobia.

But Izzy being queer wasn’t always a sure thing.

“Making Izzy a member of the LGBTQ+ community, was the writers’ intention from the beginning of her character development,” explains Dino Fury E
